Never Let Me Go

Book: Never Let Me Go

Author: Kazuo Ishiguro

Third book of Ishiguro left me speechless. My tears were endless; my thoughts so deep. Too many questions. My heart would beat and stop, and beat again.

I felt lonely, sad, even empty inside as a shell after a storm. A void inside of me was screaming and I was drowning in a pit of sorrow. Forever …

I was mesmerised by his writing; it touched all my chords. His characters seemed so real, I felt every moment I could touch them, I could feel their pain and even thoughts. Sometimes I even heard their breathing. Ishiguro is a master of words; he understands his characters so well and can describe their feelings at a very accurate level.

On one level there were all the ethical questions related to the donors. What is human, what are emotions? Questions that will always be hard to answer.

On the other side was the triangle love/relationship that was beautiful developed by Ishiguro. That was the best of the book, even if the donors theme was shocking, for me it didn’t gain as much attention.

I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it’s just too much. The current’s too strong. They’ve got to let go, drift apart. That’s how it is with us. It’s a shame, Kath, because we’ve loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can’t stay together forever.

Trapped in a world where decisions are taken by others and not by themselves; used as tools just to save the others. Is that a world that we want to have?

Never …
