Doctor Strange

Movie: Doctor Strange

Directed by Scott Derrickson

I like myths and fantasy stories and I decided watching this movie because of the description I’ve seen on a website. I didn’t check the ratings, the reviews and not even the actors. I was positively surprised to see that the main character is Benedict Cumberbatch — a very intelligent and high-quality actor who became famous after his role in the new modern Sherlock Holmes. Oh well I have to confess that I’m also one of his admirers for many reasons but the most important one is that I love his arrogance and self-confidence in all his movies and of course his strong voice and curly black hair. He’s not the typical ‘beauty’ but nevertheless an interesting beautiful man. His eyes and voice make him stronger.

Apparently this movie is based on the Marvel comics character Dr. Strange. I thought the name sounded familiar but I’ve never actually read one of this comics. I should probably at least browse through …

And now let’s go to the Doctor Strange story. It’s good to see a new film with wizards and reminds me a bit of Harry Potter. I’m still not sure I really like the action: good and evil fight as always one to protect and one to destroy, one for the world and one for herself. And what waits the good? Peace. What about the bad ones? Immortality at first, but darkness at second. So that’s all … the whole story. You find it in many of the fantasy books like for example some of Terry’s Goodkind. Anyway it’s not bad. With some action and fighting scenes. And the 3D effects are great with all the different world and realities intermixing. Colors, music and light are impressing. The conflict of Dr. Strange, a high-intellectual surgeon, very proud of his work, arrogant, confident makes the movie more credible and real. After a car accident he loses the nerves in his hands and can’t practice medicine anymore. All his life is changed, and after some struggle he decides to search elsewhere. He is forced to embrace a spiritual life he doesn’t believe in, at least at the beginning.

However the story falls in the trap of many books and movies: you have one guy who was born to save the world, exceptional intellect and character, very ego-centric, can learn very fast, very ambitious. But he’s the novice and his master dies without teaching him everything or too much. In the fighting with the bad guy he has no chance and he shouldn’t last more than 5 minutes. However he escapes every trap; what a lucky guy. It’s like Harry Potter in every novel and movie, no skills but luck and people helping him. But Dr. Strange has at least his intellect. Sorry Harry Potter but you don’t seem to be as smart as him. Anyway Strange has an advantage: he’s a scientist and knows how to play his cards. And this makes the whole difference …

I’m curious if there will be any sequel because Dr. Strange is now the strongest wizard on earth …
